Blessed are those … who delight in the law of the LORD, and meditate on his law day and night. They are like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season, and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.
Psalm 1:1-3
In the Bible, Psalm 1 describes a person who delights in God, meditating on His Word day and night. They are compared to a tree that’s planted by life-giving streams of water, giving it the nourishment it needs to flourish and to produce fruit in season. Being planted by this water source enables the tree to withstand withering and decay, to send its roots deep into the earth, and to prosper.
Roots classes are designed to help you be nourished by God’s Word, the Bible, and develop strong spiritual roots in your relationship with God. Each class is created to give you the tools to encounter Jesus in the Scriptures by learning how to study the Bible for yourself, to lead others in studying it, and to engage with it devotionally. In addition, classes on the Old and New Testaments and specific Bible books are presented to help you grasp the chronology, themes, people, and life-changing truths of Scripture.
Regardless of where you are on your spiritual journey, we believe each Roots class will have something just for you!
Roots Bible Study Skills
This class instructs people in the basics of Scripture study so that they can engage Scripture and feed themselves from the truths they discover. The course takes attendees through an in-depth look at Psalm 1, John1,and several other passages from the Bible while helping them learn to use practical tools of solid Scripture study. You’ll not only acquire tools for personal study, however, but will also be encouraged to engage with Scripture during the class, and to learn practical ways of applying passages to your daily life and the lives of others.
Roots of the Old Testament
This 5-week class is a brief overview of the Old Testament, designed to give participants a basic understanding of the overall themes that connect the books of the Old Testament. It’s also an introduction to the various styles of literature contained in the Old Testament. The class will stop at significant texts to uncover themes that thread their way throughout the Old Testament such as Genesis, the Exodus, the Law, Kings, Wisdom Literature, and the Prophets.
Roots Scripture Study
This class will take participants through a specific book of the Bible. Each time the class is offered it will walk through a different book, offering variety while focusing on both the New and Old Testaments. At this point we plan on offering one Scripture Study class each year during the month of June. This class is for the person who desires a deeper understanding of a specific book of Scripture, and desires to work through this text in community with others. ______________________________
